3. Costs of constructing dung plates and installing storage tanks for slurry

The costs of establishing facilities for storage of solid manure and slurry depend mainly on their size (surface or the capacity), construction technologies and quality of materials used. Prices and costs of installations listed below were calculated for investments in a group of 1200 farms within the program „Environment protection in rural areas” (2000-2002) conducted by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management. The costs might be considered as relatively high according to Polish standards, however the highest quality of constructions was the requirement for this program.

  For the purpose of the report net prices (without the VAT) were applied in farm level calculations (Table 6 -Table 9 ). In a consequence farmers’ costs are lowered by 22%. This is a realistic approach, assuming that increased demand for building manure storage facilities will result with more competitive market prices. The total cost of investments can be also lowered by possible farmers’ input of labour or basic materials.

The total cost of farm level investments required depending on livestock heard size and manure production might be illustrated with the following examples (Table 10 -Table 12 )
