The Danish Environmental Protection Agency,
Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Lithuania and Ministry of
Environment of the Republic of Lithuania allocated financial resources to
prepare the Code of GAP. To make ready this publication were invited the
best professionals into the working groups from Lithuanian University of
Agriculture, Lithuanian Chamber of Agriculture, Lithuanian Agricultural
Advisory Service, Farmers Union, Association of Agricultural Companies,
Institutes of Agriculture, Animal Science, Agricultural Engineering and
Water Management. The Danish Agricultural Advisory Center provided
methodical guiding during preparation of the project.
The main rules and recommendations on good farming given in this
publication are attempting that a farmer who follows them would not only
improve the environment, but also would achieve a profit that grants
sufficiently good living conditions.
The Code of GAP is a complex of legal and
recommendation measures implementation of which guarantee economic and
ecological optimum.
The Code of GAP is the first document of this type in Lithuania. The
biggest attention is paid to crop production, but questions about animal
production are also illuminated as the crop fertilization is inherently
related to manure storage and use.
The Code of Good Agricultural Practices will be useful for everybody who
wants to manage a farm profitably, to produce high quality products, and
also to preserve a healthy environment for future generations. In
addition, this publication is one more contribution to Lithuanian
preparation to enter the European Union.
