BAAP
introduction
Baltic farmers
produce food for more than 80 million people living in the Baltic Sea
drainage basin. Farming also contributes to other essential ecosystem
services, as habitats for numerous species of fauna and flora. The other
side of the coin, is that farming also possesses a threat to the
environment and aquatic ecosystems.
The Baltic
Agricultural Run-off Action Programme is an international programme about
minimizing the environmental risks of non-point source pollution from
agriculture and maximizing the environmental benefits of farming
activities in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and North West Russia.
The major challenge is connected to the efficient use of nutrients in food
production and reducing the losses to sweet- and coastal waters.
The programme comprises agri-environmental
measures based on recent developments in the Baltic Sea Region; the
degradation of the Baltic Sea ecosystem; post-soviet restructuring of
agricultural production; development of new agri-environmental policies;
European Union enlargement; introduction of new technologies and
practices; and increased regional co-operation around the Baltic Sea.
